Episode 9: Little White Lies
6/4/2004 - 6/26/2004

• Tess thinks Adam stopped by the Barca to see her and tells him she has great news but wants to tell him in private. Wanting to give Tess and Jenna a chance to clear up their misunderstanding, Adam leaves and Tess and Jenna re-bond as friends over drinks.
• Later that evening, Adam sees Jenna outside of his window, and they end up making love, only to wake up to Tess leaving a message on Adam’s answering machine informing him that she’s getting a divorce so that she can be with him.
• Jenna and Adam decide to tell Tess the truth about them, but when Adam meets up with Tess to explain, Tess is so happy to be on a date with him, he doesn’t have the heart to tell her.
• Jenna tries to tell Tess while they’re kick-boxing at the gym, but Tess won’t let her say anything that might ruin things for her and Adam.
• Jenna and Adam decide that perhaps Tess is right, ignorance is bliss and that they should bear the burden of carrying their guilt, so decide not to say anything afterall.
• Believing that Kenneth has moved on with Elizabeth, Shari packs away all her photos and reminders of Kenneth and initiates divorce proceedings.
• Adam reveals to Jenna that he’s been married before, but that’s in the past.
• Shari gets an unexpected visit from her cousin Chloe. Chloe mistakes Nathan for Kenneth and Shari plays along, not wanting Chloe to know the truth. Shari convinces Nathan to keep up the ruse and the two of them pretend to be husband and wife, knowing that Chloe would blab to all of Shari’s family in Boston, if she ever found out that Shari was getting a divorce.
• Kenneth drops by to try to fix things between him and Shari, but Shari tells him to leave and slams the door on him, not wanting Chloe to find out what’s really going on.
• Shari convinces Nathan to move in until Chloe leaves and as the sexual tension between them mounts, they both realize that sharing the same bed might prove to be a greater challenge than they had ever imagined.
• Trying to keep away from Kenneth and not having heard from George, Tess or Jenna in a while, Elizabeth decides to check out an internet site for people looking to meet other people for friendship and meets a guy on-line. Realizing they have a lot in common, they chat on-line for hours over the course of several days, calling each other only by their made-up names for each other – Cyrano and Roxanne. Not wanting to get hurt, Cyrano asks if Elizabeth has anyone else in her life. And even though Elizabeth is still pining over Kenneth and even imagines her internet guy as looking just like Kenneth, she decides to tell a little white lie and says there’s no one in her life right now. She asks if Cyrano would like to get a bubble tea with her, but he likes the way things are – the two of them getting to know each other without the superficial things like what someone looks like getting in the way. Elizabeth lets him know that she and her friends will be at Wild Ginger the next evening and hopes he’ll stop by anyway.
• Tess and Jenna take Elizabeth out to celebrate her 29th birthday.
• Meanwhile, Kenneth is courting a new client, Harold Chinn, at the same restaurant. Harold spots Elizabeth and her friends and decides to go after her. Kenneth tries to stop him, but once Harold makes up his mind, he lets nothing get in his way.
• Harold gives Elizabeth a rose and quotes a line from the play Cyrano deBergerac. Elizabeth realizes that Harold must be her Cyrano.
• Harold takes Elizabeth home, much to Kenneth’s dismay.
• Their cousin rivalry running rampant, Nathan takes Shari and Chloe out to dinner in an effort to help them keep the peace.
• Shari spots Kenneth at Wild Ginger and tries to intercept him before he sees Nathan and Chloe. Kenneth wants to know why she’s been refusing to see or talk to him and whether it was Nathan’s voice he heard when he visited the house. He asks if the reason she wants a divorce is so that she can be with Nathan. She accuses him of his relationship with Elizabeth and run off crying into the restroom. Chloe, seeing her cousin talking with this mysterious stranger, purposely bumps into Kenneth. He asks if she can do him a favor and try to get the woman who just ran into the bathroom back out to talk to him. Chloe agrees but when she returns, she says that Shari never wants to see him again. Chloe offers to cheer Kenneth up by getting him away from there. Reluctantly, Kenneth agrees to go.
• Nathan sees Jenna and goes over to say hi. They share an awkward moment as both realize that they really don’t have anything to say to each other.
• Drunk and depressed, Kenneth thanks Chloe for trying to cheer him up. Chloe invites herself into the apartment he currently shares with his sister Jenna, and before he realizes what’s happening, Chloe makes her move on him.
• Elizabeth and Harold kiss at her front door and she invites him in.
• Jenna goes to Adam’s apartment to break things off with him when Tess shows up unexpectedly and catches the two of them together.
• In a fantasy game show sequence, Shari, Elizabeth and Jenna all play the game of justifying whether the little white lies they told were worth it or not. Tess refuses to play along, proclaiming that she’s tired of people saying only what they think others want to hear and just wants people to start telling the truth.
